My Top 5…. [[Part 1]]

…..Songs that hold meaning to me.

Part 1 // Part 2 // Part 3 // Part 4 // Part 5

In times of stress, depression, anxiety, elation, indifference, angst…. All the time… We turn to music for different reasons.  We all have “those songs” that are playlisted for specific emotions and/or experiences.  It’s one of the great things about music…. It speaks for us when we can’t find the words.  It brings us together; bonds us and can make us family.

So I would like to share with you some of my Top Fives…. Of various different kinds.  This one is all about the five songs (in no specific order) that hold a lot of meaning to me.

I’d really love it if you would give them a listen if you haven’t already and share your own favourites in the comments section.

30 Seconds To Mars – Alibi

I remember the first time I actually heard this song.  Not the first time I listened to it; the first time I actually heard it.

I was in a really dark place and I had music on random while I aimlessly chatted to friends online.  At this point in my life I was struggling with anorexia still, I was self harming and I was suicidal.  Looking back the reasonings for feeling all that seems ridiculous, compared to what I’ve been through since then – but depression doesn’t need a reason.

I had been listening to Evanescence and the n there was this quiet period where my computer decided what to play next… It was Alibi.  I stopped mid-type and heard it.  I felt it.  That song called out to me and for the first time in what had been months at that point, I cried. I cried hard until my chest hurt and there was nothing left.

That line, being shouted out by Jared Leto into the ether, “I fell apart; but got back up again.”

For the first time, I believed in myself.  I believed I actually could get back up.  Before I really heard those lyrics there only seemed to be one way out for me (reflected in the lyrics to Tourniquet by Evanescence) and that’s all I saw.  Alibi made me believe.  That song changed me so completely and I dare say, saved my life… It still does.  Whenever I need a dose of self belief (and a damned good cry), that is my go too.

Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud

This one is really simple.  It’s “our song”; Vicky and I.  I remember playing drunk Minecraft while listening to music and this track came on and we sang it to each other through giggles and the occasional steel sword to the head… And falling into surface lava.

It fills me with warm fuzziest and happy feelings.  I always smile when I hear it and memories of the laughter and fun Vicky and I have fill my brain…Then I smile more, knowing there are gonna be so many more memories to make in our future.

IAMX – Insomnia

The lyrics to this track speak volumes.  It’s a total chill out song but the message is amazing; it’s also one of those tracks that could mean a thousand different things to different people.

The day is incomplete, The thoughts of total defeat.  I don’t know what is happening to me or if I’ll die cuz I just never sleep.

I’ve lost control please save me from myself.

My conscience begs for time, cuz you can’t fight the clock tickling inside.  I’m just a bigger baby me, acting smart; oh what irony.

I’ve lost control please save me from myself.

Oh my god you’re beautiful. Why do you stay with this neurotic fool?

I’ve lost control please save me from myself.

David Bowie – As the World Falls Down

My favourite ever movie is Labyrinth.  I remember watching it when I was about five years old and being absolutely captivated by Jareth The Goblin King but the story as a whole.  This magical Labyrinth that Sarah has to battle through to get her baby brother back; a place where she learns valuable lessons about not being a spoilt brat and not taking things for granted while making some rather awesome friends along the way.  (( Spoilers ahead. ))

My favourite scene is the masquerade ballroom scene after Sarah has eaten the enchanted peach Jareth sent via Hoggle, to make her forget about Toby.

I adore this scene. The clothing, the masks, the set up…. It’s perfect.  Jareth looks simply stunning in his get up; so so handsome and he’s singing this song to Sarah; who he is infatuated with – declaring his love to her… I’ve always found that part so romantic.  He treats her badly through 99% of the movie but in that one scene, he shows his true thoughts and feelings for her….. If only she would forget about Toby.

At least that’s how I’ve always interpreted it.

Halestorm – Rock Show

I love a good rock gig.  Hell, I just love a good gig.  This song encompasses every aspect, every feeling and emotion that I (and many others) feel when we’re seeing our favourite band play live.

The rush, the jumping, the connection with your faves for a couple of hours, the connection to everyone around you even though you may never have met before.

A feeling of belonging, of being accepted, wanted, loved.  Feeling like you have a place in the world.  Escaping reality for a while; getting away from your troubles and just letting loose and forgetting about everything except that exact moment.

Honourable Mentions;

Disturbed – The Sound of Silence 🎶 John Legend – All of Me 🎶 Lady GaGa – Born This Way 🎶 Adam Lambert – Whaddaya Want From Me 🎶 Katy Perry – I Kissed a Girl 🎶 Pentatonix – Sing 🎶 tATu – All the Things She Said 🎶 Ellie Goulding – Love me Like you Do 🎶 Rihanna – What Now
