…. Favourite Rock Songs
I’ve been brought up with quite eclectic tastes in music; however it’s always been the heavier side of things that I gravitate towards. At the age of five I sang along word for word to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath – much to the amusement of my mother and disgrace of my grandmother.
So…. on wards!
Black Sabbath – NIB
This is probably my absolute favourite Black Sabbath song. It always has been and probably always will be (please note: I have a favourite Ozzy Osbourne solo track).
Always found it a fun track to rock out to and I really like the message in it. Obviously it’s one of those tracks that have a different message for different people – and I love that. It’s one of the great things about music.
“Follow me now and you will not regret,
Leaving the life you led before we met.
You are the first to have this love of mine,
Forever with me ’till the end of time.”
* Using this video because – THAT WAS MY FIRST DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL! I was there for this.
Led Zeppelin – Kashmir
The obvious tracks people tend to love are Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven – both amazing tracks and I love them too – however for me it has to be Kashmir that tops my LZ playlist love.
That intro, those lyrics, the unmistakable voice. It’s just perfect!
“All I see turns to brown,
As the sun burns the ground,
And my eyes fill with sand,
As I scan this wasted land,
Try to find, try to find the way I feel.”
Pink Floyd – Shine On (You Crazy Diamond)
(Full – Parts I to IX)
I couldn’t do this Top 5 without Pink Floyd and this piece of brilliant artistry. It has a personal feel for me because from a very young age my mum said this was “My Song”. I always loved the melody and feel of the song (parts I to IX), the guitar solos just sang to me.
As I grew up and found the lyrics (Parts I to VII), I found a lot of meaning in them for my personal situations. Still to this day, my mum tells me it is “my song”.
“Remember when you were young? You shone like the sun.
Shine on, you crazy diamond
Now there’s a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
Shine on, you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter;
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine….”
It’s a song I can chill to and again, it’s a song that makes me feel…
Metallica – Unforgiven II
I fell in love with this song the moment I first heard it in 1998 (I believe the year it was released?) The video was just – amazing and one part of the video (and song) has always “clicked” with me. I still am not entirely sure why; although I’m positive when the time is right, I will understand.
“I take this key and I bury it in you because you’re unforgiven too.”
It’s led me to start designing a simple key tattoo that I’d like to have in exactly the same place as it’s shown to be put in the video.
AC/DC – Big Balls
Sometimes, you like a song simply because you sing it as a child without knowing what the fuck they’re singing about (also see; AC/DC – The Jack) and then you grow up and a little light just….. switches on. Yeah that happened to me with Big Balls and The Jack. I’ve always loved them, I still love them and they make me giggle. Sex, Dugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’
I need NO reason to add this in.
Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water // Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody // Guns ‘n’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine // Steppenwolf – Born to be Wild // Free – All Right Now // Ram Jam – Black Betty // The Rolling Stones – Can’t Get no Satisfaction // The Kinks – You Really Got Me
